FSB Working Together – Skipton

October 21, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Craven Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is keen to encourage organisations to collaborate in projects and initiatives that will benefit the economy, community and environment in this part of the world.

To get the ball rolling there will be a meeting at The Rendezvous on Tuesday 21st October commencing at 6.30pm. Mary Arber, who manages the Skipton Partnership (BID), will bring us up to date on the latest developments following the decision to renew it for another 5 years.

The FSB is issuing an open invitation to anyone who is interested in making a contribution or simply wishes to voice an opinion to attend this meeting.

Various suggestions have already been made which include:

  • Launching an Awards scheme for businesses in the Craven area. This might include categories such as “Best Large Business”, “Best Small Business”, “Best New Business”, “Best Innovative Business”, “Best Business to Work In” etc. This type of initiative has worked very well in other areas by generating a “feel good” factor. If we could get a similar scheme off the ground here it should help to attract more entrepreneurs whose ideas and energy can make a real difference to the market town and villages in Craven.
  • Establishing a Task Force for Young Enterprise, which is a programme that facilitates school pupils to set up their company and gain valuable experience and insight into the way business operates. Several schools in Craven regularly participate. Last year the team from Skipton Girls’ High School was very successful, winning an award at the national final having progressed through the various preliminary rounds.
  • Supporting Small Business Saturday, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to shop local and patronise businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December.
  • Encouraging local businesses to boost tourism in the area. Many businesses have clients from all over the country and even further afield. There may be some companies who could utilise these links to provide information about the area in the hope that some might decide to spend a holiday here.

No doubt there are lots of other ideas which would be worth exploring. The prime object of the meeting is to evaluate all options and see if we can find the enthusiasm and resources to make some of them happen.

If anyone is interested please contact Verner Wheelock, Chairman of Craven FSB.
