Malham Tarn Field Studies Centre is an ideal place to study a wide range of subjects and we offer courses at all levels for schools, colleges and universities as well as special interest and leisure courses for adults and families. Our programme of courses includes something for everyone – whether a fun holiday or learning experience. Our Real Family Holidays offer the opportunity to get outdoors with the kids, mixing a choice of exciting activities with plenty of time to do your own thing. At £25 per person per night, including all food, accommodation and an activity each day they are very affordable.
Independent groups wishing to use the Centre as a venue for their own course, conference or event, whether on a residential or daily basis, are also welcome. Visitors will find a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere with warm and comfortable accommodation in three buildings. Rooms available range from seven bed bunk rooms to twin rooms with some en suite facilities available. There are four well equipped study rooms, library, drying room, common rooms and bar.
The Centre is situated on the north shore of Malham Tarn at an altitude of 381m, set in the magnificent limestone scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The estate is owned by the National Trust who lease the Centre to the FSC. The area is of outstanding interest for its geology and landscape and the Tarn – a shallow lake fed by springs from the surrounding limestone – is the focus of an internationally important National Nature Reserve, a Ramsar site and three SSSIs.
There is an astonishing variety of plant and animal habitats for the altitude, ranging from woodlands and grasslands to a fascinating complex of wetlands and open water. A long sequence of human occupation has left its mark on this distinctive landscape. Malham Tarn Field Centre, opened in 1947, was one of the first of twenty residential Centres in the UK run by the Field Studies Council, an independent educational charity, bringing Environmental Understanding to All.
